Sea Trout Fishing in Ireland
BrackishBreac Geal
Salmo trutta
Description
Fishing for sea trout is a pursuit that demands local knowledge and a sharp eye, especially along the coasts of Donegal, Wexford, and Waterford. You will find these stunning fish in venues like Killybegs, the Erris beaches, and Morriscastle, particularly in the early spring months of March and April. The typical specimen weighs in at about 2.5lb (1.134kg), but the best fish recorded have reached up to 7lb (3.18kg). Shore fishing remains the primary method for these migratory predators, though some are caught by boat. Use a varied approach including mackerel, lug, black wrap, sandeel, or squid to entice a take. As a highly valued migratory species, please respect any local tagging or conservation measures in place to preserve their runs. Tip: During high tides, focus on river estuaries or sandy surf beaches where sea trout congregate to hunt for sandeels.
Identification
Silver flanks (fresh run). Few spots. Forked tail. More streamlined than brown trout.
