Dab Fishing in Ireland
Saltwater
Deabhóg
Limanda limanda
Description
When the winter chill sets in, turn your attention to the dab, a species that offers fantastic sport from the shore during the lean months of January through April. County Cork, Donegal, and Wexford are among the top locations for these prolific flatfish, with venues like Cobh and Killala Bay providing reliable action. Fishing effectively requires a mix of fish baits and worms, as dabs are opportunistic feeders that respond well to scent trails. While they are often considered a smaller species, they can provide excellent light-tackle fishing when the larger game is scarce. Coastal harbours and beaches are particularly productive environments for them. Always use a multi-hook rig with small, sharp hooks to help secure these often delicate biters.
Identification
