Cod Fishing in Ireland

Description

If you are looking for a solid day on the boat, look no further than the Irish cod. May through July is the peak period, particularly in productive marks like Donegal Bay, Courtmacsherry, and Galway Bay. These rugged predators typically weigh around 8.5lb (3.86kg), though top fish can reach an impressive 18lb (8.16kg). Boat fishing is the primary method, often using soft plastics or slow jigs to tempt them off the bottom. While they are a staple in County Cork, they are well distributed along our western and southern coasts. For a reliable approach, try working slow jigs near deep-water wrecks or rocky structure, as these areas provide the best cover for larger, feeding cod.
