Coalfish Fishing in Ireland
Saltwater
Glasán
Pollachius virens
Description
Coalfish are powerful, schooling predators that provide consistent action for Irish anglers. They are best pursued from boats between April and June, though November can also yield decent results. While Galway Bay, Courtmacsherry, and West Clare are top venues, you will encounter them throughout the coastal waters of Cork and Donegal. Expect typical weights to hover around 5lb (2.27kg), with the best specimens reaching upwards of 7lb (3.175kg). Boat anglers should rely on feathers or lures to find the shoals, while shore anglers can score using a mix of rag and mackerel. These fish are aggressive feeders, so do not be afraid to use a fast retrieve to trigger their predatory instincts when the shoals are active.
Identification
Three dorsal fins. Straight pale lateral line. Dark back. Forked tail. Small chin barbel.
